Toyota hybrid's sales into seven digits, and company sees no slowdown

(Newser) – The Toyota Prius is a now 1 million units strong, and the landmark gas-electric hybrid, introduced in 1997, is poised to keep growing, the AP reports. Toyota said today it expects to be selling a million a year by sometime after 2010; what’s more, the company claims 4.5 million tons of harmful gases have been taken out of the air since its debut.

(NEWSER) - A trans-Pacific partnership between Ford and Toyota is set to bring us a new generation of hybrid vehicles. The two companies will join together in creating a gas-electric hybrid system suited to light trucks and SUVs, the Wall Street Journal reports. The two firms already have hybrid systems that power front-wheel drive cars; now, they’ll aim to make rear-wheel drive vehicles more efficient within the next decade. More»

Highlander, Lexus hybrid SUVs have defective computer boards

(AP) - Toyota will recall about 82,200 hybrid SUVs in the US because of computer boards with possible faulty wiring. The car giant said today’s recall will involve about 45,500 Highlander and 36,700 Lexus Rx 400h hybrid SUVs from its 2006 and 2007 lines. The action covers just the vehicles sold in the US, with no other models affected. The recall is the latest setback for Toyota, which is just recovering from the earthquake and tsunami that devastated Japan in March. More»

Toyota Recalls 106K First-Generation Priuses

If 'operated over a long time' power steering will become too forceful

(AP) - Toyota recalled 106,000 first-generation Prius hybrid cars globally today for faulty steering caused by a nut that may come loose. Loose nuts in the electric-power steering can cause the vehicle, if operated over a long time, to steer with too much force. Only one minor accident, reported in the US, has been suspected of being related to the problem. There were, however, 21 complaints that may have been caused by the loose nuts, the automaker said. The issue can be fixed by putting in better nuts and will take about four hours. More»
