Applause for Reprise

Joachim Trier’s debut film, the honest and amusing dramedy Reprise, is wowing critics. The film, which tells the story of a pair of young aspiring writers, “opens like a portrait of the artist as a young man (times two) and, with stealth and wit, metamorphoses into something wide and deep and funny,” writes Manohla Dargis in the New York Times.
Exploring what-ifs and characters’ imaginations on their road to successes and failures, “the entire film plays out in the conditional tense,” writes Ella Taylor in the Village Voice. It can be hard at times to keep up,” notes Scott Tobias of the Onion A.V. Club. Just don’t try too hard, he says. Instead, sit back and absorb what Taylor calls a “savage, funny, tender, tragic, and strangely beautiful riff on growing up in a broken world.”
