Lieberman, Hagel Cross Aisles to Pound Candidates

Posted May 21, 08 1:25 PM CDT in Politics

(Newser) – Joe Lieberman and Chuck Hagel are fighting a duel of aisle-crossing foreign policy critiques, as the former Dem candidate takes aim at Obama and the GOP heavyweight scolds McCain. “How did the Democratic Party get here?” Joe asks in a Wall Street Journal op-ed, accusing Barack of kow-towing to extremists who have taken the party “further to the left” than at any point in two decades.

Obama has abandoned the strong internationalism of FDR, Truman, and JFK, he charges, and views America as a “morally bankrupt, imperialist power.” Meanwhile, Hagel is “very upset with John,” who he says “is smarter than some of the things he is saying.” Hagel says meeting with enemies, as Obama pledges to do, “doesn’t mean … you agree with them,” while McCain has made it difficult to talk diplomacy, lest you “be branded as an appeaser.”
