Rockier-than-average hurricane season predicted; 5 possibly severe

(Newser) – Federal storm watchers warned of a possible 16 named storms, and five major hurricanes, this year, the Miami Herald reports. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced a 65% probability that the hurricane season, which stretches for 6 months from June 1, “may very well be a busy” one. The prediction jibes with a forecast issued by university scientists.

Of course, one scientist leading the public prediction team admitted their forecasts have been wrong the past three years. The feds were a little more circumspect, urging all to “be ready if a hurricane warning is issued,” but cautioning that the prediction does not indicate when or where a storm might manifest itself. A “normal” season has just two hurricanes with winds over 110 mph.
