In Poll, Californians Oppose Gay Marriage—Barely

Posted May 23, 08 10:01 AM CDT in Arts & Living US

(Newser) – A majority of Californians opposes gay marriage, but the margin is very slim, according to a new LA Times poll. For the moment, gay marriage is legal in California, but voters could ban it by approving a constitutional amendment in November. Right now 54% say they support a ban. But a majority also believes that homosexuality isn’t morally wrong.

Though 52% said they disapproved of same-sex marriage, 59% agreed that if two people are in a loving, committed relationship, gender didn’t matter. The poll also reveals a deep generational divide, with those under 45 far more likely to support gay marriage. “To kids nowadays it’s like, ‘Oh well,’” said one 57-year-old marriage opponent. “Maybe it is, ‘Oh well.’ They see it. We didn’t see it.”
