Stone Sees 'Karma' in China Quake

Beijing hasn't been treating Tibet very kindly, actress notes

(Newser) – Sharon Stone might consider leaving international politics and the mysteries of the universe alone. The outspoken activist actress raised eyebrows on a Cannes red carpet last week when, during an on-air interview, she suggested that the Chinese earthquake that is believed to have killed 67,000 might have resulted from "karma" in Tibet, People reports.

"At first, I am not happy about the ways the Chinese were treating the Tibetans," she started, referring to the alleged human rights violations. "And then all this earthquake and stuff happened and I thought, 'Is that Karma, when you're not nice that the bad things happen to you?'"

(NEWSER) - The body of a monk who killed himself yesterday morning by drinking kerosene, dousing himself, and lighting himself on fire was taken from the police in western China by hundreds of angry Tibetans and paraded through the streets, reports the AP . Police initially refused to hand over the body, but relented after protesters smashed the police station's windows and doors. The official Xinhua News Agency confirmed yesterday's death, and identified the monk as Nyage Sonamdrugyu, 40. It said his body was returned to his relatives so a traditional funeral could be held. Tsewang Norbu dies in self-immolation protest

(NEWSER) - A Tibetan Buddhist monk set himself on fire today in southwest China while calling out the Dalai Lama's name, the latest in a string of self-immolation protests in that country as well as North Africa. Tsewang Norbu, 29, "drank petrol, sprayed petrol on himself, and then set himself on fire," says the Free Tibet organization in a statement. "He was heard calling out: 'We Tibetan people want freedom,' 'Long live the Dalai Lama,' and 'Let the Dalai Lama Return to Tibet.' He is believed to have died at the scene." More»
