Obama, McCain Mix It Up on Nuclear Policy

Republican distances himself from Bush policies

(Newser) – John McCain called for a new nuclear arms pact with Russia and said the US should show more "broad-minded internationalism" to reduce weapons around the world. McCain seemed to distance himself from President Bush's policies, and he took a veiled swipe at Barack Obama for the notion that sitting down with "hostile governments" is all that's necessary to rein in nuclear programs, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Obama's camp struck back, notes Talking Points Memo, ribbing McCain for “highlighting Obama's leadership on nuclear weapons. ... No speech by John McCain can change the fact that he has not led on non-proliferation issues when he had the chance in the Senate.” Hecklers disrupted McCain's speech several times, though he drew loud applause for asserting, "I will never surrender in Iraq."
