Amnesty Again Demands Gitmo Closure

Posted May 28, 08 11:46 AM CDT in US World

(Newser) – The US has “distinguished itself in recent years through defiance of international law,”  says human-rights advocate Amnesty International in its annual reports, released today. The group called for the closure of Guantanamo Bay and other secret detention centers , the New York Times reports, and the prosecution of "detainees under fair trial standards or release them."

Amnesty also singled out China to “live up to the human rights promises it made around the Olympic Games” and Russia to “show greater tolerance due political dissent, and none for immunity on human rights abuses in Chechnya.” “Flashpoints” in Darfur, Zimbabwe, Gaza, Iraq, and Myanmar also “demand immediate action,” the report said.
