(Newser) – Osama bin Laden's deputy has called on Muslims to launch a holy war to break Israel's economic blockade of Gaza, reports AP. The call was issued in an 11-minute al-Qaeda audiotape by Ayman al-Zawahri, marking the anniversary of the loss of Gaza, the West Bank and the Golan Heights in the 1967 Arab-Israeli war.

"The sons of the nation should break the shackles of the treacherous regimes and move to wage jihad," said al-Zawahri, who also attacked Egypt for closing its border with Gaza. "You have the right to enter Egypt whenever you like and destroy the treacherous siege. Those who confront you should not blame anyone but themselves."

(NEWSER) - Moammar Gadhafi may be dead and gone, but Libya's woes beat on: al-Qaeda is attempting to claw its way into the country, according to a Libyan source. The source told CNN that al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri personally sent a veteran jihadist to Libya earlier this year, along with other committed fighters, in an attempt to establish a force there. That veteran, known as "AA," reportedly arrived in May and has since built up a 200-strong force in the country's east, near its border with Egypt. More»

(NEWSER) - Al-Qaeda is on the brink of defeat, shriveling even faster than US officials had predicted in the wake of Osama bin Laden’s death. (NEWSER) - The new head of al-Qaeda gets gooey-eyed over his old boss in a video being circulated on jihadist websites. Ayman al-Zawahiri invites viewers to join him in reflection on Osama bin Laden's human side, recalling the dead al-Qaeda leader as "tender, gentle, kind, with refined feelings, even when life was hard," the BBC reports.
