S. Carolina Raises a Fuss With Religious Vanity Plates

(Newser) – South Carolinians will soon be able to put Jesus on their bumper. A new law went into effect yesterday requiring the state’s Motor Vehicles Department to produce cross-adorned “I Believe” license plates, the New York Times reports. But the plates aren’t kosher with the American Jewish Congress or the ACLU, which are contemplating suing the state.

The plates will cost $4-$6, while other specialty plates cost up to $70. “The whole issue here is that people are trying to get the state to endorse their religion, and that’s wrong,” said an ACLU executive. But a state senator doesn’t see the problem. “Just because it’s a cross, some very closed-minded people don’t believe it should be on a plate.”
