Profs to Buffy: You Slay Me

Posted Jun 6, 08 2:03 PM CDT in Arts & Living

(Newser) Buffy the Vampire Slayer started out lowbrow, but don’t tell that to the academics converging on Henderson State University today for a 3-day conference on the campy TV classic. The cheerleader-turned-monster fighter has inspired the kind of study usually reserved for major philosophers, the AP reports. The Arkansas university boasts a 15-foot bookshelf lined with Buffy books.

The conference will see more than 90 papers presented, on topics ranging from feminism to mythology. “It has staying power,” said one associate philosophy professor. Philosophers are “not so much about necessarily finding all the answers as wanting to ask better questions. Buffy, I think, does that. Buffy never really leaves you with nice, pat answers.”
