Summer Tips for Greener Kids

Posted Jun 12, 08 10:14 AM CDT in Arts & Living Science & Health

(Newser) – Summer is the perfect season to turn your rugrats into ecomaniacs, as warm weather and school vacations collide. Grist lists some basic steps to green up your family’s summer:

  1. Get outside: The best way to commune with nature is to experience it first-hand, but the time kids spend outdoors has shrunk by half over the past 20 years.

  1. Eat well: A trip to the farmers market is an adventure for kids—and the perfect time to introduce them to super-fresh produce while supporting local growers.
  2. Careful what you smear: Not all sprays are created equal—use plant-based repellents for the safest results, and avoid any sunscreens that contain PABA.
  3. Green your garden: Avoid pesticides and gas-run lawn mowers in yards where kids will be playing.
