Detroit Mayor's Blunders Hurt Mom's Reelection Chances

Posted Jun 11, 08 8:00 AM CDT in Politics Gossip US

(Newser) – She’s a popular 11-year incumbent with a $500,000 war chest facing two cash-strapped two opponents, but Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick still faces a challenge in defending her House seat, the Detroit Free Press reports. Why? Her son is Kwame Kilpatrick, the Detroit mayor recently charged with perjury in a highly public scandal involving an affair with his chief of staff.

Already, rivals have constructed ads juxtaposing Cheeks Kilpatrick’s public shows of support for her son with lists of his misdeeds. But for all their political ammunition, the challengers will have to find money to make the criticisms stick and unseat the head of the Congressional Black Caucus in the Aug. 5 primary.
