Web's Growth Shows No Sign of Pause

(Newser) – Internet traffic continues to grow at an astonishing pace, GigaOm reports. A study by Cisco Systems has found that world network traffic will increase 46% from 2007 to 2012. By 2012, the annual bandwidth demand is estimated to become 522 exabytes—a billion gigabytes.

Some more highlights from Cisco's study:

  • Global IP traffic will top 44 exabytes per month in 2012, compared to 7 per month in 2007 and 5 in all of 2002.
  • Mobile internet traffic will double each year from now until 2012. The US will overtake Japan in phone data transfers in 2009 (iPhone, anyone?).
  • Internet video traffic in 2012 will be 400 times the amount of total data transmitted over the Internet in 2000.
