(Newser) – Sick of the bland beer everyone else is drinking? As summer officially kicks off, William Brand pours a frosty glass of small-but-mighty suds suggestions in the San Jose Mercury News:

Alaskan Summer Ale (Alaskan Brewing): This gold-medal-winning Juneau native makes an excellent thirst-quencher, in the Kolsch style you might've savored in Cologne.

Zatec Bright Lager (Zatecky Pivovar): Zatec is essentially a pilsner, but in the Czech Republic, a beer's only a pilsner if it's made in Pilsen, where the recipe was invented. Still, what with its brewer's 400-year craft tradition, Zatec is one of the best “bright lagers” around.
Maui Coconut Porter (Maui Brewing Co.): Unavailable outside Hawaii until just this month, the smooth blend of coconut and a lighter beer style makes for a mellow summer drink.

(NEWSER) - Federal health officials have released their most detailed study yet of America's binge drinkers—and if you're a college-educated, high-earning young white man from Wisconsin, you may already be drunk by the time you read this. (NEWSER) - Who needs Santa when you have the FDA? The government agency handed boozy partygoers everywhere a big holiday gift: It recently OK'd a hangover pill called Blowfish. The over-the-counter tablets, designed to be taken upon waking, Alka Seltzer-style, contain some not-too-foreign ingredients: 1,000 milligrams of aspirin, 120 milligrams of caffeine, and a stomach-calming element. It's supposed to provide relief in as little as 15 minutes, reports the New York Daily News . More»

Brewing at Chicago Starbucks: Beer, Wine

Chicago-area stores to offer booze, entertainment

(NEWSER) - There's still no chance of getting an Irish coffee in Starbucks, but beer and wine will soon be available in up to seven of the coffee chain's Chicago-area outlets. Following a model first introduced in Seattle and Portland, Starbucks aims to boost traffic in the evenings by offering beer and wine, as well as plate snacks like bread with olive oil and live music and poetry readings in some stores, the Chicago Tribune reports. Researchers examining 16 studies involving some 200,000 participants have concluded that drinking about a pint of beer a day reduces your risk of heart disease by an average of 31%, LiveScience reports, a benefit similar to that of drinking a glass of wine a day.
