(Newser) – A woman in Stockton, Calif., is facing elder-abuse charges after she allegedly attacked a 71-year-old woman who caught her parking in a handicap spot without a permit, CBS reports. The victim says her 26-year-old assailant “put her baby down and came at me with both hands” when she saw the older woman taking a photo of her license plate. The victim was knocked down but not seriously hurt.

(NEWSER) - The battle over tight parking turned deadly over the weekend when a Baltimore man slammed an off-duty detective in the head with a chunk of concrete as the two argued over a free spot in front of a restaurant, police report. Brian Stevenson, an 18-year veteran of the Baltimore force, was celebrating his 38th birthday when the two men argued over the spot. Sian James, 25, picked up a block of concrete and hurled it at Stevenson, striking him in the head, according to witnesses. More»

(NEWSER) - Understaffed US nursing homes are increasingly turning to antipsychotic drugs to control elderly residents, even though most display symptoms of dementia rather than the psychotic disorders the drugs are intended to treat, the Wall Street Journal reports. (NEWSER) - A chilling photo of dead newlywed diver Tina Watson sinking near her apparently unconcerned husband has been entered into evidence in his Alabama murder trial. Prosecutors say expert diver Gabe Watson killed his wife in the waters off Australia during their 2003 honeymoon to collect $130,000 in life insurance . He turned off her air long enough to kill her, turned it back on, then let her sink to the ocean floor, they charge. Watson says his wife panicked underwater and knocked off his face mask. By the time he adjusted it, she had sunk too far away for him to help her, according to his attorney. More»

Detroit trial begins against members of Hutaree

(NEWSER) - Michigan militants armed to the teeth were poised to launch a "war" on the government, a federal prosecutor argued yesterday in the start of a criminal case in Detroit against seven members of the Hutaree group. All are charged with plotting to kill a police officer in order to launch an attack on cops attending the funeral, and spark an uprising. "This war will come whether we're ready or not. Now's the time to strike and take the nation back," said one of the defendants in a videotape played for the jury. Assistant US Attorney Christopher Graveline displayed an arsenal of 20 machine guns and short-barreled rifles along with 148,000 rounds of ammo he said were seized from group members, reports the Detroit News.
