(Newser) – The latest severed foot to wash ashore in Canada is a hoax, the Toronto Globe and Mail reports. The sneaker found this week near Vancouver actually contained an animal paw stuffed into a sock, authorities say. An official described the prank as “reprehensible and very disrespectful to the families of missing persons.” That leaves at five the number of feet that have washed up in the last year, fueling fears of a serial killer in British Columbia.

6.4 Quake Hits Off Vancouver

No damage has been reported

(AP) - A magnitude-6.4 earthquake struck today off the coast of British Colombia, the US Geological Survey said. The quake struck at 12:41pm PDT about 173 miles west of Vancouver. No immediate reports have damage have surfaced. "It's been felt pretty widely—we have reports of it being felt in Vancouver, Victoria, and even in Seattle," a USGS geophysicist tells the Vancouver Sun . Canadian woman phoned in tip about male passenger

(NEWSER) - The bomb scare that required a Pakistani passenger jet with 273 people aboard to make an emergency landing in Stockholm was apparently a hoax. Authorities diverted the plane, which took off from Toronto, after getting a tip that a man aboard had explosives. He turned out to be clean and cooperated with authorities in a "calm but irritated" manner, one official tells AP . He's described only as a Canadian citizen born in 1982. More»

7th Severed Foot Hits Canadian Shores

Like others, severed by natural causes, but no less mysterious

(NEWSER) - Another foot has washed up on a British Columbia beach, bringing the total to seven over the last two years. The right foot, inside a running shoe like some of the others, was separated from the body through a “natural process,” police officials tell the Vancouver Sun. Officials will analyze it in the hopes of identifying the victim. At least one of the other feet remains unidentified, though it's a righty as well. More»
