DC Man Dons $54M Pants Suit for Day in Court

(Newser) – A man suing his dry cleaners for $54 million had to ask the judge for a break yesterday when he broke down crying as he testified about his loss—a pair of pants. The DC Superior Court trial has attracted international attention even though the case now technically concerns consumer protection and a "Satisfaction Guaranteed" sign, not the pricey pants.

Plaintiff Roy Pearson, himself a judge, originally demanded $65 million. The dry cleaners' lawyer called the situation "outlandish," but he has his work cut out for him: Pearson said in his opening statement that "never before in recorded history have a group of defendants engaged in such misleading and unfair business practices." The trial is expected to wrap up today.
