'I'm Left of Nic,' Carla Confesses

Posted Jun 23, 08 4:57 AM CDT in Gossip World

(Newser) – They may look like an always-happy couple, but France's First Lady Carla Bruni has confessed she doesn't agree with husband Nicolas Sarkozy's right-wing politics. She's not alone. Just a year after his election, polls have shown Sarkozy is the most unpopular president in six decades, reports the Daily Telegraph. "My instinctive reflexes are left-wing," Bruni told Liberation. She and her husband are not politically "joined at the hip."

Still, her hubby isn't as bad as she imagined conservatives could be. "My husband doesn't correspond to the idea I had of conservatives—nor does he correspond to a large chunk of those people who make up his party," she said. And maybe she'll be able to transform his politics. She has already managed to convince him to tone down his "bling-bling" adoration of big watches in favor of her "more austere" style, she boasted.
