Repubs Desert Bush, Driving Approval Numbers Down

NBC/Journal poll records record low

(Newser) – President Bush's approval rating has dropped to 29%, plummeting 6 points in two months. It's his lowest number ever in the NBC/Wall Street Journal poll and reflects disintegrating support within his own party. The results further reveals that only one in five Americans believe the country is on the right track—the lowest number in nearly 15 years.

Republican support for the president fell from 75% in April to 62%, and his disapproval rating in the same group soared from 21% to 32%. Pollsters track the drop to GOP frustration with the president's steadfast support for the immigration reform bill. The survey was conducted before he visited Capitol Hill Tuesday to lobby for the stalled legislation.
