Church Asks Mormons to Oppose Calif. Gay Unions

(Newser) – The Mormon church is pushing its members to vote for a California ballot measure that would ban gay marriage, the Deseret News reports. As "marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God," leaders exhort Mormons to “do all you can” to ensure November passage of an amendment to the state’s constitution

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, as it is formally known, also urged members to support a California ban on same-sex marriage that passed as a public referendum; that prohibition was struck down last month. "We are extremely disappointed in their action," said a representative of a support group for homosexual Mormons. "It doesn't affect religious marriage."
