Auction raises money for wounded soldiers

(Newser) – Fans of fictional mob boss Tony Soprano shelled out nearly $200,000 for the outfits he wore on his hit TV series, including a set of "blood-spattered" threads, reports E! Online. Top grossing was the suit and undershirt Tony wore when Uncle Junior shot him in season 6, which fetched $44,000. The money will go to the Wounded Warriors charity for soldiers injured in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Amid competition so fierce that bids sometimes jumped by a million dollars, the $116 million sale of the late star's gems broke the world record for a private collection of jewels along with six other records, including the price for a pearl, Forbes reports. (NEWSER) - Looks like the stars were aligned for Ringo. A 1960 letter written by Paul McCartney sought a drummer for the Beatles two years before Starr joined the Fab Four. The note was discovered folded into a book at a Liverpool yard sale, the AP reports. It was a response to an ad placed by a drummer looking for a band. (NEWSER) - An auction next week in New York will feature the belongings of movie cowboy Roy Rogers—including the preserved remains of his famous horse, Trigger. Christie's in Manhattan held a preview today, the AP reports . The items are from the now-closed Roy Rogers and Dale Evans Museum in Branson, Mo. Rogers had his faithful companion preserved with taxidermy in 1965. The presale estimate for the dead horse is $100,000 to $200,000. More»

McCarthy Typewriter Sells for $254,500

Auction for machine smashes $20K estimate

(NEWSER) - The typewriter Cormac McCarthy used in creating his novels sold today for $254,500, smashing presale estimates of its value. Christie's auction house had projected a winning bid of about $20,000 for the Olivetti manual machine on which McCarthy wrote The Road and No Country for Old Men, among other works. An anonymous buyer will pony up far more cash, which will go to charity. More»
