Mac Rests Up on Weekends

Posted Jun 26, 08 5:20 PM CDT in Politics

(Newser) – John McCain has held only one public weekend event since becoming the presumptive nominee in February, Politico reports. The downtime—used to rest, meet privately with donors, and bone up on policy—is frustrating to those who think the Republican hasn't done enough to take advantage of his early victory. Advisers rebut that during most of that stretch, the Democratic primary was robbing all the headlines anyway.

Another looming dynamic in the weekends-off policy is McCain’s age. While the soon-to-be 72-year-old kicks back, his spry challenger has done 7 events on June weekends alone. Other watchers say the strategy of viewing the race as a marathon instead of a sprint is sound. "The worst thing they can do for McCain is run him ragged,” said a former aide on the Bob Dole campaign.
