Mugabe Expected to Declare Landslide Victory Today

Posted Jun 28, 08 10:31 AM CDT in World

(Newser) – Robert Mugabe is wasting little time. Zimbabwe is expected to announce today that he will win in a landslide and be sworn in to a new term as early as tomorrow, Reuters reports. That would allow him to attend Monday's summit of African Union nations with the election wrapped up. Meanwhile, stories continue to surface about Mugabe's supporters forcing people to vote for him under threat of torture or death.

"They said they would come to see if we voted," said one man, who made sure to get his  finger inked to prove he did so. "They know if we went to vote we would have to vote for the president. They were watching." The UN Security Council has condemned the election, and Western leaders are urging AU leader to take action next week.
