5 Killed in Mongolian Election Riots

Posted Jul 2, 08 4:25 AM CDT in World

(Newser) – Five people died and hundreds were injured in rioting yesterday against election results in the Mongolian capital of Ulan Bator, reports the BBC. Hordes of angry protesters supporting the opposition party took to the streets yesterday after victory was declared for the ruling party. Its headquarters and other government buildings were torched as thousands of stone-throwing rioters battled police.

The protesters allege electoral fraud, although international observers said the election appeared to be free and fair. "If most people voted for us why did we lose?" asked the opposition leader. "Corrupt people changed the results." Mongolia's president has declared a four-day state of emergency. Roadblocks have gone up in the capital and alcohol sales have been banned.
