'The Fly' Morphs Into Opera

Posted Jul 3, 08 1:35 PM CDT in Arts & Living

(Newser) – David Cronenberg’s horror classic The Fly has metamorphosed into something new: an opera. This new, unholy horror-opera hybrid was unleashed on Paris last night, garnering at least somewhat enthusiastic applause, Bloomberg reports. Intact were all the things that made the movie memorable: its tragic love plot, hideous monster and, of course, lots of gore.

Original composer Howard Shore updated his score for the Opera and drew scattered boos during the curtain call. “The music was a let-down,” one fan told the Guardian. But Cronenberg is optimistic. “Someone’s 6-year-old said that she thought she would have to sleep with her parents, so I guess it’s working.” The show runs through July 13 before coming to LA. So be afraid, California. Be very afraid.
