How to Get His Groove Back

Posted Jul 5, 08 8:51 PM CDT in Politics

(Newser) – After a nasty campaign, Bill Clinton has a serious image problem. But if he moves quickly, he can escape any long-term damage, reports Politico, which surveys experts in the field for advice on his behalf. “He needs to put this story behind him by Labor Day,” said one, and he should start by offering his sincere support to Obama. "Right now what he is doing is thinking about Bill Clinton. He has to put the party and country first.” Other advice:

  • Don't steal the spotlight. He should pick his spots, say a convention speech, where he can shine.
  • Regain the rank of statesman—perhaps with an emphasis on Africa?—he achieved after leaving office. Don't descend again to the merely political.
  • Find an advocacy issue to help reconnect with the black community.
  • Be aware of living in a "YouTube world," in which every utterance can haunt.
  • "He’s got to also be a more mature, seasoned kind of brand,” a publicist said. “That young deal was entertaining with the saxophone, but it’s over. You’re not Elvis anymore.”
