Conservatives Set for Stand on GOP Platform

Posted Jul 7, 08 4:31 PM CDT in Politics

(Newser) – Conservatives are concerned John McCain might be a maverick with a pen, and are gearing up for a fight on the Republican Party's official election platform, the Washington Post reports. Loath to imagine where McCain might go on climate change, immigration, stem cells and more, activists are already on platform watch. “There’s no question it’s going to be changed radically,” laments one.

Wingers will be watching the guest-worker program, the global-warming section (currently only one paragraph), the abortion clauses (“we don't want a comma changed,” said an anti-abortionist) and talk of campaign finance. McCain’s campaign plays it cool, expressing confidence it can draft a document “all Republicans will enthusiastically support" during the Sept. 1-4 convention.
