(Newser) – Worried about the appeal John McCain has for military veterans among its members, the AFL-CIO is launching an advertising campaign criticizing the Republican's economic policies, the Chicago Tribune reports. The union will spend $53.4 million on the campaign, running mainly in places like Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Virginia— battleground states hit hard by the economic downturn.
"Every vet respects John McCain's war service. It's his record in the Senate that I have a problem with," one Navy veteran says in the ad. "He wants us to keep spending $10 billion a month in Iraq, just like Bush. That's money we could use to build schools and roads and create needed jobs here at home."

Bush that McCain does not. More »

With the candidates' help, “my hope is that we can reach an agreement very shortly,” Bush said. Key lawmakers said they had reached a tentative deal earlier today, but doubts remained. "I don't believe we have an agreement," said Sen. Richard Shelby, top Republican on the banking panel, after emerging from the White House meeting. More »
Sep 25, 08 2:31 PM CDT The financial crisis is turning the presidential campaign into a “Goldilocks story," Gail Collins writes in the New York Times. McCain, “desperately reinventing his position every day,” has halted his campaign to focus on Wall Street, while Obama has coolly mentioned he may skip out on the rescue bill vote. Yet, so far, their solutions are “both vaguely similar and similarly vague." More »
