AP Pulls Faked Tornado Video

Posted Jul 10, 08 8:58 AM CDT in Arts & Living

(Newser) – The Associated Press has pulled a video described as depicting a tornado that hit Nebraska last weekend after a storm chaser claimed that it was faked. After Andy Fabel sold the clip to the AP, which passed it along to 2,000 websites, another man noticed similarities between it and his own footage of a twister that hit Kansas 4 years ago.

The new image appears to have been flipped and sped up, with trees removed and power lines added in. "Based on evidence provided to us, we believe that the video was not authentic," says an AP higher-up. Although Fabel told networks his footage was authentic, "There was enough evidence for us to make it suspect," says an NBC producer.

This image made from a manipulated video shows what is purported to be a twister that briefly touched down Saturday afternoon July 5, 2008 near Valentine, Neb.   (AP Photo)
With the same flat landscapes and threatening skies, any image of storms in Nebraska and Kansas can look fairly similar to the next.   ((c) lemoncat1)
