Olympic Swimmer Has Cancer

Posted Jul 11, 08 4:11 PM CDT in Sports

(Newser) – US Olympic swimmer Eric Shanteau has testicular cancer, he tells the AP, but will put off surgery to compete in next month's Beijing Games. Shanteau, 24, unexpectedly locked in the 200-meter breaststroke July 3—just days after he was given the diagnosis. "I made the team, so I had a hard decision," he said. "But, by no means am I being stupid about this."

Shanteau will be monitored closely and vows to withdraw if the situation worsens. He got a pep talk from the agent of cyclist Lance Armstrong, who beat the same cancer to win the Tour de France seven times. "If I can have a fraction of the impact that he's had, just a tiny little bit, then I think what I'm going through will be good," Shanteau said.
