Guinness Sales Flat in ... Ireland?

(Newser) – Ireland still drinks a lot of beer—only the Czechs down more—and continues to chug a lot of Guinness. But in a cultural shift in the newly vibrant nation, sales of the national drink have steadily declined in recent years, as harried white-collar workers skip the pub on the way home, and foreign workers opt for a taste of home instead of “the black stuff,” the Los Angeles Times reports.

"Years ago, everybody drank Guinness," said a 36-year-old Dubliner. "But young people don't drink Guinness. We just drink Budweiser. Guinness is more of an old fellow's drink." But don’t start shedding tears for the stout yet: The multinational that owns the Dublin brewery stresses that while domestic production will be downsized, the global trend in sales “has been inextricably upwards.”

Irish police say the thief entered by truck and took off with a trailer packed with kegs, the biggest theft in Guinness history.
