Morneau Wins HR Derby, But Hamilton Wows

(Newser) – Justin Morneau won the Home Run Derby last night, but Josh Hamilton got all the attention—and rightly so, writes the New York Times. The Texas slugger hit a record 28 bombs in the first round alone, and smashed 35 homers total, to Morneau's 22. “I rarely watch myself on highlights, but tonight I may have to,” said Hamilton.

Before the festivities, Hamilton announced his goal of becoming the first player ever to hit a ball out of Yankee Stadium. There he fell short, but only just—a 518-foot rocket hit the second upper section, and another long ball hit a sign above the right-field bleachers. The display impressed fans and fellow All-Stars alike, including Morneau.
