Perlozzo Fired After Baltimore Drops 8 Straight

Posted Jun 19, 07 4:23 AM CDT in Sports

(Newser) – With the Orioles at 29-40 after a brutal 1-8 homestand, three-year manager Sam Perlozzo was fired  yesterday. Perlozzo had accumulated a record of 122-164 in the unforgiving AL East, and had few backers left after a string of questionable moves, especially with regard to an underachieving bullpen that got a $40 million overhaul million during the offseason.

The first manager to be sacked this year, Perluzzo had also advocated trading star shortstop Miguel Tejada. A Baltimore veep noted that the recent homestand included "maybe some of the most horrific losses this club has ever endured." Additionally, long-time Cubs chief and member of baseball royalty Andy MacPhail will be hired as COO.
