AL Wins 15-Inning Marathon

Posted Jul 15, 08 11:30 PM CDT in Sports

(Newser) – Michael Young's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 15th gave the American League a 4-3 victory in a marathon All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium. Justin Morneau slid under the tag with the winning run to end the game after 4 hours and 40 minutes. Neither team had any pitchers left, the AP reports. The NL hasn't won since 1996, and the victory means the AL will have home-field advantage in this year's World Series.

The teams combined for 27 hits, the AL with 14 of them. JD Drew homered for the winners, and Matt Holliday for the losers. The night began with a pre-game tribute to the 85-year-old Bronx stadium, now in its final season. Nearly 50 Hall-of-Famers, including Willy Mays and Hank Aaron, strolled onto the field, took their old positions, then greeted their modern-day counterparts as they were introduced.
