No Stopping Gay Marriage's Mass. Appeal

Posted Jul 17, 08 1:54 PM CDT in Arts & Living Opinion Politics

(Newser) – With Massachusetts legislators set to repeal a law ex-Gov. Mitt Romney hoped would prevent the state from becoming “the Las Vegas of same-sex marriage,” Gail Collins, in the New York Times, looks at the march toward equality. For one thing, with the economy the way it is, “becoming the Las Vegas of anything whatsoever began to sound like a good deal."

"After four years, same-sex marriage has also begun to feel normal in Massachusetts. It’s not something that comes up in conversation much anymore. There is no greater force against bigotry than the moment when something becomes so routine that you stop noticing it," Collins writes. "The forces of history are only on one side here. There’s going to be a long-term happy ending."
