Scrabble Seduces Senegal

Nation that has come to dominate French competition hosts world championships

(Newser) – Despite the country’s 40% literacy rate, Senegal considers Scrabble as important as the national soccer team, and this week hosts the Francophone Scrabble World Championships. Senegalese dominated last year’s event, the BBC reports, and hope to repeat on home turf. “Nowhere else in the world can you find such excitement and dedication to the game,” an admiring French champion says.

Senegalese players have already claimed nine world championships, and one winner’s success even earned him a post as a governmental economic adviser. Around 600 players from 21 countries are set to attend, and could need some of the 14 words in Senegal’s Wolof dialect now in the game’s dictionary. Triple word score for xalam, mon ami?

(NEWSER) - The World Scrabble Championship wrapped up yesterday in Warsaw, and not without more than a little drama. A Thai player became convinced that England's Ed Martin had squirreled away a 'G' tile—and demanded that he be hauled to the bathroom and strip-searched. Officials declined, the Telegraph reports, and Martin won the match. Scrabble Dictionary Adds 'Thang,' 'Grrl'

But apparently not for US players

(NEWSER) - Kinda cool: You can now use Indian words like "aloo" and "gobi" in Scrabble. Not so cool: You can also use slang words like "thang," "innit," and (cringe) "grrl." All of the above have been added to Collins Official Scrabble Words, a book one world champion says is "like the Bible really for Scrabble players." Good news for North American players, however: You can still snarkily deride anyone who tries to pull a "grrl," as the champ concedes that US and Canada players use Webster's dictionary, not Collins. (AP) - A man set himself on fire in front of the presidential palace in Senegal today in the latest self-immolation on the African continent. He's being treated at a hospital, and his motive isn't known. The mutiny in Tunisia that ousted President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali was touched off by a 26-year-old who lit himself on fire, and other self-immolations quickly took place elsewhere in northern Africa and the Middle East.
