(Newser) – Speculation is heating up that John McCain may pick his running mate this week, in a move to divert attention from the media frenzy surrounding Barack Obama's tour through the Mideast and Europe, CNN reports. Then again, there's speculation that the VP rumors themselves are just a “head fake” to distract from the saturation Obama coverage.

One adviser said even that was a ruse to cover up an undisciplined report. “Because someone is an idiot, so we have to explain it as a tactic.” Asked point blank on his plane yesterday if he was announcing today, McCain just grinned and walked away. But the discussion does indicate that McCain has “narrowed” his choices, and could pick if so inclined, another source said. McCain is in New Hampshire today—a stone’s throw from Mitt Romney’s abode —and will fly to Louisiana tomorrow to meet with Bobby Jindal.
