Bush Expands Zimbabwe Sanctions

Posted Jul 25, 08 2:00 PM CDT in US World

(Newser) – President Bush is expanding US sanctions against Zimbabwe, the New York Times reports, two weeks after Russia and China vetoed his call for UN action. “No regime should ignore the will of its own people and calls from the international community without consequences,” Bush said today.

Bush isn’t alone, however; the EU also stepped up its pressure on Robert Mugabe’s regime this week. The US already had sanctions standing against Mugabe, 129 other people and 35 businesses. Today’s action targets 17 more businesses identified as “regime cronies.”
