A gunman opened fire at a Knoxville, Tenn., Unitarian church today, killing two and wounding seven others before he was subdued, CNN reports. He was later charged with first-degree murder in the death of the first victim. The attack occurred about 10am while children were performing the musical Annie, church members told WVLT.

"Greg McKendry stood in the front of the gunman and took the blast to protect the rest of us," a witness said of the first victim. Bail for Jim D. Adkisson was set at $1 million, and federal and local law enforcement officers were searching his home, the Knoxville News Sentinel reported. A dozen other people suffered minor injuries and were treated at the church. (More church shootings stories.)
