CIA Helped Devise Torture Tactics

Posted Jun 21, 07 6:25 PM CDT in US World

(Newser) – The CIA apparently colluded with the US military to develop torture techniques for interrogating terrorist suspects, Salon reports. The program was based on methods originally designed to teach American special forces how to withstand abuse if captured. While the military's role in this "reverse engineering" had been previously exposed, the CIA link is a revelation.

Two CIA psychologists, currently under investigation, are believed to be the architects of   the secret program, which got underway after 9/11. The techniques, said to have been used on detainees at Guantanamo, Iraq, Afghanistan and so-called CIA 'black sites," were likely in violation of the Geneva Conventions. The involvement of the spy agency suggests that senior administration officials condoned the program.
