Montauk Monster? Hoax? What Is That Thing?
Is the Montauk Monster for real? Or maybe just a viral marketing campaign?   (Shutter Stock)

It's a monster! Or maybe not. Either way, the blogosphere is afire trying to get to the bottom of the Montauk Monster mystery, reports New York magazine. It seems a very monster-like (but lifeless) creature washed ashore on Montauk near Long Island. It's about the size of a large dog, hairless, leathery, with a dinosaur-like beak (click on the link for a photo). Gawker originally posted the story, speculating it could be a viral marketing campaign of some sort.

So far, though, it remains a mystery. It's not even clear who picked up the creature from the beach or where it is now. "I saw the monster," one man told New York. "I just came walking down the beach and everyone was looking at it. No one knew what it was." One delicious rumor: It's the product of a secret "government animal testing facility." Run for your lives!
