Duke Seeking More Privacy for British Royals

Legal challenge aims to set boundaries for 'public interest'

(Newser) – The Duke of Edinburgh is using a recent ruling by Britain’s High Court—one that sided against the press in the unfortunate Max Mosley Nazi sex scandal—as the basis for a legal challenge to win more privacy for the royal family, the Daily Telegraph reports. Prince Philip is taking a complaint against a paper that alleged he has prostate cancer to Britain’s Press Complaints Commission, hoping it will rule such information outside the realm of “public interest.”

“This is a much wider issue than the health of Prince Philip,” a royal source told the paper. “It is to establish clear boundaries through the PCC code and privacy law over what should be in the public domain.” News about Queen Elizabeth is another story, the source acknowledged. “As head of state, she is in a different league. There would be a public interest.”

The Duke of Edinburgh is pushing for privacy reform that would bar the media from reporting on the private affairs of British royals.
