John Edwards is under increasing pressure from senior Democrats to address published reports he has been having an affair with a former campaign worker and is the father of her child. Edwards' status in the party and his role in the upcoming national convention are at stake, reports the Charlotte Observer. "He has to issue a stronger denial,” said a Democratic strategist who ran Edward's 1998 Senate campagin.

"If it’s not true, he’s got to stand up and say, ‘That is not my child and I’m going to take legal action against the people who are spreading these lies,' " added the strategist. "It’s not enough to say, ‘That’s tabloid trash.’ " The National Enquirer claims to have "caught" Edwards visiting the woman, videographer Rielle Hunter, and the child at a Beverly Hills hotel 2 weeks ago, and published a photo said to show Edwards with the child yesterday.
