Steve Carell rode an ark to the top of the weekend box office, where "Evan Almighty" racked up $32.1 million to take the top spot in its first week in release. That the heavily advertised follow-up to blockbuster "Bruce Almighty" seized the No. 1 spot was no shocker; the surprise of the weekend was the supernatural thriller "1408."

John Cusack stars in "1408," which raked in $20.1 million, the best opening ever for a Stephen King adaptation. "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer," "Ocean's Thirteen," and "Knocked Up" rounded out the weekend top five. Incessant publicity didn't appear to boost the profile of "A Mighty Heart," which landed at No. 10, the AP reports. (More Evan Almighty stories.)
