Ahmadinejad Says Israel to Be 'Removed Soon'

Iranian president's comments meant to reassure hardliners

(Newser) – Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called Israel “a germ of corruption” to be “removed soon” in comments on his presidential website today, the AP reports. While the outburst is nothing new for the Iranian leader, the posts were probably meant to reassure hawks enraged by the vice president’s comments last week that Iranians are “friends of all people in the world—even Israelis.”

Iranian groups say 10,000 have signed up

(AP) - Hardline Iranian student groups have asked the government to authorize volunteers to carry out suicide bombings in Israel in response to the Israeli assault on the Gaza Strip. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's government has not responded to the call. Five student groups and a conservative clerical group launched a registration drive on Monday and claim that more than 10,000 volunteers have signed up. More»

The Israeli Madonna nuts are spreading the word through a Facebook group called "Bibi don't star a war with Iran until after Madonna's show on May 29," reports the New York Daily News . President urges diplomatic solution to nuclear crisis

(AP) - President Barack Obama said today he does not think Israel has decided whether to attack Iran over its disputed nuclear program, a standoff that has the Middle East on edge. The president sought to assure allies and foes alike that the United States was working in lockstep with Israel to solve the crisis, "hopefully diplomatically." Obama's comments came as Israel's major allies in the West are working hard to talk it out of a unilateral military strike on Iran's nuclear facilities, arguing forcefully that an attack ultimately would only strengthen the regime in Tehran.
