Tampa eatery receives city's first canine permit

Puppy-lovers can now legally chow down in the company of their canine companions at Tampa's Java & Cream cafe, the first eatery in the city to boast a dog-dining permit. Permits for pups have been required in Tampa since 2006, though restaurateurs have apparently been unaware of the law: The city received its first application just last month, reports the Tampa Tribune.
To comply with the permit, workers must wash their hands after touching dogs and refrain from petting while putting out food. Canine courtyards must also provide hand sanitizers and cleaning supplies. Though one businessman has complained about the $120 annual fee, a city official voiced surprise at restaurateurs’ lack of interest. “Maybe they're concerned about patrons who don't want to eat with their neighbors' dogs."
