Denver: Not the Life of the Party

Dems may be nervous about election or about drinking at altitude

(Newser) – Democrats are having an unusual problem at this year’s convention: They’re not having much fun, the New York Times reports. “Normally at conventions, you’d have people regaling you with what happened the night before,” said one exec who’s been party-hopping. “This time, not a single person has given me a story.” Blame Denver’s high altitude and sprawling layout—or Democratic anxiety over the election.

Party big wigs have warned against drinking, since alcohol takes hold faster at high altitude. But the mood in Denver is also sober, as Democrats remember all too well their misplaced confidence at the 2000 and 2004 conventions. Still, some convention-goers insisted on having a good time. Said one delegate at Planned Parenthood’s Sex, Politics, and Cocktails party: “The air is thin, and we’re all high.”
