McCain to Air Rebuttal Ad, Could Leak VP Choice Tonight

GOP goal is to distract from Obama speech

Share

(Newser) – John McCain has a top-secret ad scheduled to run during or just after Barack Obama’s acceptance speech in battleground states—and the campaign could leak news of the Republican’s running mate even earlier, Mike Allen writes on Politico. Little is known about the ad, save that McCain will address Obama personally, speaking directly into the camera.

The ad hype is just one of the sideshows McCain may use to distract from Obama’s big night, Allen notes. McCain is reportedly naming his man tomorrow, but Matt Drudge of the Drudge Report ran a headline this morning reading “SOURCE: NAME MAY LEAK AT 6 PM ET... WITH SOME SORT OF CONFIRMATION AT 8 PM.” Drudge is known to have high-level McCain contacts.

News of John McCain's running mate could be leaked around 6 pm ET tonight, the Drudge Report hints; Barack Obama is scheduled to speak between 10-11 pm.

"He's going to be talking directly to his opponent," John McCain's communications director says of tonight's new ad. "It's going be very exciting. I think a lot of people are going to focus on it."   (AP Photo)
