(Newser) – Of Troopergate, the “Bridge to Nowhere,” and the other so-called scandals the left has been hoping will sully Sarah Palin’s reputation, Arianna Huffington scoffs: “who cares?” McCain-Palin will gladly take up time discussing various small lies to distract from the “big truth”: that George Bush’s terms have unleashed havoc on America, and the Republican ticket represents “4 more years of disaster.”
As Huffington sees it, discussions of Palin’s accomplishments distract from her real accomplishment: she’s shifted the political debate away from George Bush’s record, and other actual campaign issues, in only 10 days. It’s time for Barack Obama to stop worrying so much about being seen as the “angry black man,” and get angrier about what Bush has done to everyday voters’ lives.

Oct 20, 08 2:25 PM CDT Indiana has voted Republican 16 times in the past 17 presidential elections, so why is Barack Obama even bothering to run ads and rally? The state that favored George W. Bush over John Kerry 60-39% is showing surprising support for Obama—enough that he could scrape out a win, Salon reports. And if that does happen, it'll be because the Obama team spotted opportunity among that state's long history of campaign neglect. More »
Oct 16, 08 12:40 PM CDT It’s been a fun time for liberals, writes Rosa Brooks in the LA Times. Though initially worried about the boost Sarah Palin gave to John McCain’s polling numbers, Dems were then treated to the defections of some of the GOP’s brightest thinkers. Columnists David Brooks, Charles Krauthammer, and former Bush speechwriter David Frum all backed away from McCain, charging that the Alaska governor was out of her league. More »
Oct 15, 08 12:35 PM CDT In the current economic morass, the US cannot afford to wait 9 weeks to install the new president after he is elected in November, Richard Tedlow and David Ruben write in the Boston Globe. But wait—doesn’t the Constitution dictate the date of the inauguration? “Changing that would take years, not days,” write the two Harvard profs. “But there is a way out…” More »
Oct 14, 08 10:34 PM CDT It's been hard to miss the spate of reports about ugly anti-Obama incidents at McCain/Palin events—a crowd member calling him a “terrorist,” for instance. The media is now playing a game of "find a freak" at GOP rallies and grossly distorting the notion of genuine harm coming Obama's way, writes Sean Collins in Spiked. That these fears have gained traction underscores just how alienated Democrats have become from white, working-class voters. More »
Oct 7, 08 8:55 AM CDT When John McCain picked Sarah Palin, he hoped she’d measure up nicely against Barack Obama's rock-star appeal. “The choice is Obama vs. Palin,” Lindsey Graham explained, “and she has done things rather than talk about things.” Instead, Palin is proving just how impressive Obama is, writes Jonathan Allen of CQ Politics. “In nearly two years on the campaign trail, the Democratic nominee has never once looked as lost as Palin” did in her televised interviews.
